About Works
Title: 《Day by Day》
Yu Sora’s choice of materials are fabric and thread. She uses fabric to envelop the objects placed in the exhibition space, therefore, figuratively speaking, it serves as their skin surface. The black thread, in turn, is used to stitch the “skin” together to shape forms. This use of fabric and thread are the same as when making clothing or kimonos. However, Yu expands their use to make the interior of an entire room. White is the color of choice for Yu for her cloth and fabric. While the room is filled with everyday objects and furniture that we are familiar with, their white “skin” de-familiarizes the room and creates a strange dream-like scene or parallel metaverse. It could possibly conjure memories from the past. Unlike the inorganic last scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Yu’s spaces are subtly warm and even nostalgic. The black thread may be the magic that is piecing together our memories, and the white, minimalistic space and somewhat sterile cleanliness creates a unique atmosphere. It could even be said that her work is a large-scale installation or an absorptive work where the audience can experience. Yu’s black thread may be her metaphorical insight that sews worlds together.
