This work began when 2021 Fuji Textile Week exhibiting artist Aiko TEZUKA saw Goro MURAYAMA's hand-drawn sketch, swiched sync cellular automaton[hand drawing] #2. Inspired by the concept, she suggested that the drawing be made into reality, and thanks to the cooperation of a weaver in Fujiyoshida, Murayama was able to do just that.
A cellular automaton is a mathematical model in which a spatial grid of cells is viewed over time, generating various patterns by assigning rules to each cell of the grid. As this model also manifests in the creation and growth of living organisms, Murayama developed his mathematical model by reading into various issues, such as creation and death, as well as the creative process of humans and machines.The work exhibited here uses Murayama's mathematical model program to analyze the characteristics of the patterns that arise and then compares attributes of regularity and randomness. He also says that he is able to measure the “robustness” of the information, which has been systematically discussed in the fields of bioethics and information engineering. From this, he finds the exquisite balance between life and its environment, that is, the inevitability of a lifespan. At the same time, the “robustness” of textiles is superimposed on the physical storage medium of digital data, much like how the primitive mechanisms of a computer work in a Jacquard loom to create something physical, which Murayama considers to be extremely meaningful.

1983年東京生まれ。アーティスト。博士(美術)。自己組織的なプロセスやパターンを、絵画やドローイングをとおして表現している。2010年、shiseido art egg賞を受賞。2015年、東京芸術大学美術研究科博士後期課程美術専攻油画(壁画)研究領域修了。2015-17年、文化庁新進芸術家海外研修員としてウィーンにて滞在制作(ウィーン大学間文化哲学研究室客員研究員)。近年の展覧会に、2022年「瀬戸内国際芸術祭」男木島 / 香川(’19)、「Drawings – Plurality 複数性へと向かうドローイング〈記号、有機体、機械〉」PARCO Museum TOKYO / 東京、2020年 個展 「Painting Folding」 Takuro Someya Contemporary Art / 東京、2019年「あいちトリエンナーレ2019 情の時代」 愛知県美術館、「L’homme qui marche Verkörperung des Sperrigen」クンストハレ ビーレフェルト、 「The Extended Mind」 Talbot Rice Gallery、 スコットランドなど。現在、NTTインターコミュニケーションセンター(ICC)にて新作「Painting folding 2.0」を発表、手製の織物絵画から「Alpha fold」の予測計算を介して現実に存在しうるタンパク質構造をデザインする試みを展開している。
