About Works
[Curatorial Comment]

Founded in 1970 by Issey Miyake, ISSEY MIYAKE has consistently articulated a design philosophy grounded in the concept of “a single piece of cloth.” Carrying this lineage forward, A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE has, since 2021, reexamined the very process of forming garments from a single thread, positioning itself as a brand that explores new modes of expression at the intersection of clothing and art.
For this exhibition, five previously unseen works produced by the engineering team of A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE—led by designer Yoshiyuki Miyamae—in partnership with artist Tadanori Yokoo for the project “TADANORI YOKOO ISSEY MIYAKE” are presented inside the former ice storage room of the old Fuji Seihyo Ice Factory.
These pieces reconstruct Yokoo’s paintings within the structure of a single textile, using weaving techniques developed in Fujiyoshida. By modulating thread density and layering colored yarns, the chromatic dynamics and visual motion inherent to the original oil paintings are translated into the interior of the woven cloth and rearticulated in a new form. The interplay of differing colors on the front and back, together with the exposure of the weave’s structural logic, stands out as a technically notable achievement.
Moreover, the premise that these works are “paintings that are wearable as garments” introduces the potential for direct bodily engagement, prompting viewers to consider not only the reinterpretation of painting but also the shifting relationship between art and the body, and between art and everyday life, within a changing society.

A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE

A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE is a brand that sets out to weave the future by instigating dialogues on clothing between creators and wearers. A-POC, announced in 1998, has revolutionized the process of clothes-making, where it introduced a new form of design in which the wearers partake. With more dynamism, a team of engineers led by Yoshiyuki Miyamae set out to further develop what A-POC has created and evolved into over time. Within a piece of cloth bringing about different ideas and diverse relationships with the wearers, the brand creates a variety of "ABLE's" by engaging with different professions and industries.
