Title: 《Small Factory》

As their name may suggest, PACIFICA COLLECTIVES is an interior goods brand that works together with artists like an art collective to produce specialized interior goods. PACIFICA COLLECTIVES and its network of rug craftsmen from hand-dyeing of threads to production, selects artists with consideration of their personalities and compatibility. Due in part to this careful and collective process, PACIFICA COLLECTIVES plays a leading role in the subculture and street culture scene beyond just an interior brand.

In the venue which used to be a thread shop in the old silk shop district, hand-dyed spools of thread in various colors are displayed stuck on art rugs in the process of production. The production method requires painstakingly combining dozens of hand-dyed colors to make an image that is “shot” into a plain fabric. As a collective of contemporary and traditional artists and craftsmen, PACIFICA COLLECTIVE’s works, that lie on the intersection of art and the everyday, share a sort of metaphorical parallelity with the process in which the works are made.

At SARUYA HOSTEL, a pop-up installation is on display. Exhibited concurrently with the exhibition at the old thread shop, the shop is also an extension of the artistic practice of PACIFICA COLLECTIVES. By exhibiting not only the process but also inviting visitors to experience the works in their everyday lives at home, PACIFICA COLLECTIVES seems to also echo the history of textile production in this town and around the Mt. Fuji area.

PACIFICA COLLECTIVES

PACIFICA COLLECTIVES fuse interior design and art to create their own artist-interior brand. Collaborating with artists and illustrators, they translate art into designs for interior objects such as rugs, cushions, and clocks that are like artworks that consumers “want to collect.” They advocate that their products are “Made in Japan” and are leading figures in the hand-making of art rugs.
PACIFICA COLLECTIVES opened their gallery in 2020 in Kudanshita, Tokyo to showcase vintage furniture and artworks. They have collaborated with Japanese and overseas artists such as KINJO, Tomoe Miyazaki, FACE, Yusuke Hanai, Masaho Anotani, Jeffrey Sincich, and Nathanial Russell among others, and have organized events and pop-art stores at Daikanyama T-Site and Isetan Shinjuku.
